Components of your roof

THE DECK Every roof needs this solid foundation. Stripping the old shingles is the only way to check for wood rot, which must repaired as a first step in reroofing. After the deck is ready, underlay and shingles can be applied.

EAVE PROTECTION Combats ice buildup during the freeze/thaw cycle.

DRIP EDGE This metal flashing, is installed along the edge of the roof deck at the eaves. The drip edge diverts water into the eaves and protects the wooden deck from rot.

FELT UNDERLAY Installed on the roof deck under the shingles, felt underlay provides a second line of defence by shedding any water driven under the shingles.

VALLEYS These critical under-shingle areas must be lined with shields to channel away ice and water.

FLASHING Flashing closes gaps around chimneys and dormers.

VENTILATION Often overlooked, vents to allow inside air to escaped are very important.

SHINGLES Designed to shed water rather than seal a roof, shingles take the worst that Ottawa weather can offer. The heavier the shingle the better the protection, and the longer the warranty.
